Understanding Gen-Y

Understand Gen Y

GMP has partnered with Temasek Polytechnic's School of Humanities & Social Sciences in a survey that has revealed differences in preferences, attitudes and beliefs between younger workers (Generation Y) and their more senior colleagues (the Other Generations) at the workplace. The recent survey of 2,610 Singaporeans reveals interesting perspectives on potential issues of conflicts and the mindset differences between different age groups of employees. The objective is to provide employers with a better understanding of these issues and how they could be resolved. The recommendations provided in the survey report aim to help employers better structure their HR strategies, and also gain a competitive edge when the economy turns.

The report has four key areas of research, namely:

  • Generational Diversity in Today's Workplace
How is Gen Y perceived by others at the workplace? How do they perceive their senior colleagues and managers in turn?

  • Recruiting and Retaining Generation Y
How do the practices of organisations in attracting and retaining workers relate to Gen Y's job search strategies? What are the factors that motivate them to remain in an organisation?

  • Work-life Harmony at Work
How much work-life harmony do Gen Y-ers and their senior colleagues experience? What WLH practices work best for Gen Y-ers?

  • Leading Generation Y
Are the beliefs of managers about leading Gen Y in alignment with how Gen Y prefers to be led?
